If we decide to go on an exotic trip to a place we have never been before, we would want to go with a guide who knows the terrain very well. Our guide would make our journey as pleasant as possible.
We liken a coach to that kind of guide, except there are rules that a coach has to follow. We call them rules of engagement. First and foremost is the rule of confidentiality. Secondly, the coach does not have value judgment. Trust is implicit and honored. The person who has tusted the coach is neither good nor bad. In the environment of authenticity and trust, there is the feedom to just be. Thirdly, the coach acknowledges that he or she is on equal footing with the client. The coach may in fact know something more about the clients' state of mind and may have found ways to make the client's life easier, but he or she would never presume such knowledge and make the client do his or her bidding, for such an act requires taking the power of the client to make his choice and find his way.
Every person has the power to choose. This power to choose how to think, feel and act is the greatest gift of all. The coach very simply brings the client back to that space in which the client can access the wisdom that would lead to his action. Within this space, the coach and client can co-create.
